NOTE: To change your city of Detroit withholdings please go to the W4 Tax Form information page for the City of Detroit form.
Background:
The City of Detroit requires that Non-Resident taxpayers who allocate less than 100% of their income to services performed in the city of Detroit (on Part 3 of Form 5121; City schedule W), obtain a letter from their employer to verify columns B E . Employees are also asked to retain a work log, if applicable. Employees should maintain copies of their work log and the employer letter as the State of Michigan Treasury may request copies.
While the University is not in a position to verify the amount of time individual employees have worked in or outside the City of Detroit, WSU is providing a template letter for use in responding to the City's specific request. It can be completed by the employee and his/her manager or supervisor. Each employee is responsible for maintaining accurate documentation of their information (i.e., worklog). The University is also not in a position to and does not provide tax advice to its employees. Therefore, employees should consult with their own tax advisors about the Detroit non-resident tax return requirements.
